Redder

Images 5 This Game is Something Special
While some like to complain about backtracking in metroidvanias… (which is pretty much what a metroidvania is, and thus one should get over it or even better, not review genres that one clearly states they don’t like to begin with. “Asinine.”)

Even with a simple setup and story, Redder offers a very unique game mechanic which gives it a memorable factor which won’t be soon forgotten.

Sadly, to talk about it would ruin the game because it’s crux lies solely in this device which slowly creeps into your experience unknowingly.

If you can’t handle backtracking then don’t play it, otherwise it’s a great little game full of tidbit puzzles and exploration.

You Have to Win the Game

Images 4 Great Metroidvania
I love nothing more than a Metroidvania platformer and this game successfully accomplishes what it sets out to do. With it’s retro graphic set up and interface with archaic sound effects, it truly gives you that nostalgic throwback that the creator intended for. (as stated in in the game) The game is very smooth but has some very difficult spots that can be overcome with patience and a cool brow. The only lacking factor for me is some type of tangible goal; There is an abrupt ending with no story line, which I suppose is fine for a game entitled “You Have to Win the Game.” I feel that this aspect would highly improve the game because without something memorable, the game is left somewhat forgettable even with it’s throwback nostalgia and interface.

Perhaps I’m being a bit harsh but give me some type of memorable experience beyond a game mechanic and I’ll remember you forever.

Warning Forever

Bubble_bobble__pixelated_art_by_kyusen 5 SHMUP Masterpiece
The two main files take about 916kB only. But the less the size, the bigger the fun. Gameplay is Shmup at its best, you need to react, to shoot, and maneuver your ship around the generated battleships. as they become bigger and bigger, with improved weapons and engines, you’ll be blasted soon enough. WF succeeds in taking the gameplay to the point, it offers what Shmup addicts want, and extra features include e.g. highscorelist, automatic recording, gamepad support, fullscreen, amazing sound effects, ..it runs very well and without problems on my Win7/64 rig with a absolutely low end gfx card (8400 GS). 5 out of 5.

Verminest

Images 3 I "Wanted" to love this game
Ever complain that a game is relentless and too hard? then you haven’t played this game. While I enjoy the game style and story-esque aspect, there are elements that makes the player try a few times before putting this game down and never playing it again.

I suppose my real difficulty with this game is the lack of power-ups, that they are pre-determined and leave you helpless in the later levels if you die even once. When you are allotted a power-up, you have to earn it with a HIGH chance of missing the opportunity altogether.

I love the idea, game play and levels,

but the difficulty with the power-ups needs to be addressed.
