This is an indie effort akin to Pulp Fiction or Velvet Underground in that it has inspired many ambitious developers to make their own games, often in its style.

And with reason. It’s good—with a sprawling amount of content, combining elements from platformers like Metroid and the Wonder Boy series, with some role playing elements and a cute story.

Very impressive considering the entire thing was done by one guy: engine, content, graphics, and music.

If you haven’t played it, consider it an essential.

Even though this game has been around since 2004 I did not play it or purchase it until Christmas of 2010. My friend recommended it to me and I bought it off of the DSiWare Store. I didn’t know what to expect but I had a feeling I would like it.

This game is amazing:

The music is catchy and reminds me of the good ol’ days of the only game music around being chiptunes. The music is catchy and great on the ears. The music of each level fits very well.

The weapons are all unique and you can use any of them that you choose and still be able to kick random monster butt.

Pixel said he wanted to make a game that was like the games he played as a kid. This game is like Zelda, Metroid and Castlevania had a kid. You can explore each level and find secret areas like in Zelda. You run and gun like Metroid with interesting and sometimes challenging enemies and platforming. You have several interesting weapons like in Castlevania.

The plot is random and very japanese-ish (you can tell it was made by a japanese guy). The plot really gets you involved and has some twists and turns depending on what you as the player does in the game (alternate levels and weapons etc.,)

I recommend that you play this game and that you buy it on the DSi. I wouldnt recommend buying it on the Wii because they changed the pixelized art style and changed the chiptune music. The DSi version didnt ruin everything like the Wii version did.

This game is not just a walk in the park. This game is extremely challenging in the later levels. Especially if you try to do a no-hit run on the final level “Hell” aka “Blood Stained Santcuary”. You will be challenged, trust me.

I give this game a 5/5. It is my new favorite game and it has inspired me to make my own indie games based off my childhood gaming memories.
