Cave Story

Toadsanime 5 Doukutsu Monogatari: Cave Story
I feel a strong need to write a review for this game, despite that you’ve probably heard it all before. This is, without a doubt, one of my favourite Indie freeware games. The game’s storyline is massive and superb, as are the amount of characters/enemies in the game. This action/platformer game is famous in the Indie world, and not many people that read this will of not played it. This game litterally has no flaws. Even the download size is extremely small for such a lengthy game. Another notable part of this wonderful game is the music. The music in this game is truly marvellous. I could (and do, for a matter of fact) sit and listen to the music for several hours as a seperate form of entertainment. If you’re one of the very few who have not yet played this god-send of a game, I urge you to do so now. You will not be disappointed, so long as you have an ounce of good taste in games. Apart from that, there’s hardly anything I can add to this review that you won’t already know. If you’ve already played this and loved it, make sure you also play Daisuke Amaya’s (Pixel’s) ‘Ikachan’ game. It’s just as magical as Cave Story, which is saying something.

Cacodemon’s Barbecue Party in Hell

Toadsanime 3 Cacodemon's Barbecue Party in Hell
Created by the well-known Petrio Purho, this mini-game-esque game features the Cacodemon as the main character, whom originally was a demon in the famous game ‘DOOM’.

The music, although not original, suits the gameplay. The graphics are well put together, and the gameplay is pretty neat, too. The only problem is that this hasn’t got very much replay value. This may be the cause of the fact that the game doesn’t save your high-scores, which doesn’t exactly leave many reasons left for you to want to play it frequently… well, unless you break into hysterics whenever you see a kitten being skinned and burned alive, of course.

Bloody Zombies

Toadsanime 3 Bloody Zombies
Bloody Zombies was, for the time it lasted, a very good game. The graphics are pretty neat in my opinion, and the gamplay is excellent. Playing with the keyboard and mouse actually has no disadvantages, so if you’re not playing with the controller, this alternative is just as simple to use. This game has two downfalls, however, each taking away a full star from my rating:

- The game’s length is lacking. Playing this through a second time takes about five minutes.

- You cannot die. Even if you stand right next to the zombies, they cannot harm you in any way. This makes the game maybe a little too easy.

If this game was ever updated and the issues were resolved, then ‘Bloody Zombies’ would be an excellent game. There are a few mods of this game out there, (for example, ‘Bloody Goomba’s’) but none that match up to this original. Nevertheless, this game is still enjoyable whilst it lasts and is worth a definite play. And for those that still aren’t aware, this game was based on a comedic zombie film called ‘Brain Dead’.

Aveyond I: Rhen’s Quest

Toadsanime 4 Aveyond I: Rhen's Quest
Aveyond is actually one of the very first Indie games that I’ve played, and was one of my favourites at the time. Despite the fact that I’ve only played the demo, this RPG is definitely one of (if not the) best Indie RPG’s out there. Reminiscent of the old Final Fantasy games, this is a real treasure for lovers of the genre. With a solid storyline and great characters, I urge you to at least give the demo a go.

Toadsanime 3 Guxt
Albeit that I’m not a SHMUP fan exactly, I did find this game to be quite enjoyable, if not slightly difficult. Though it is clearly not ‘unique’ as such, the music and graphics are rather old-school and pleasing. As said in the game description, this is just a ‘simple shoot ’em up’ game, but it definitely has a nice feel to it. If you’re a fan of the genre, then you should give this a try and make out what you think of it for yourselves.
