Rogue

Game Description

Rogue is a classic, turn-based dungeon crawl that was popularized on university Unix systems during the 80's and is credited with starting the "roguelike" genre of games. In Rogue, the player is charged with obtaining the Amulet of Yendor at the bottom of the dungeon, and then ascending to the surface. It was one of the first graphical roleplaying games, and one of the earliest fantasy games to feature randomized dungeons.

Since its release, it has inspired countless remakes, clones, and similar games, including the popular mainstream game series Diablo.

The original Rogue is a must play for anyone who is a fan of the genre. Hopefully my review will be accurate, as the last time I played this game I was a solid 6 years old (in retrospect, perhaps this is part of the reason I found the game so difficult).

In Rogue, the player explores an unmapped and randomly generated dungeon searching for treasure and fighting enemies along the way. For the most part, I remember the monsters being very polarized in difficulty; either they’d keel over in one hit, or they were unforgivingly rigid. Despite the simple and dated graphics, I was on the edge of my seat as I navigated through grey ASCII passages wondering if my next step would lead to death by ogre.
