<body>RCF's basic play mechanic of clear the level would mean nothing if it wasn't for the random nature within the levels. Your enemy type and character are randomly switched up every 15 or so seconds, which can sometimes lead to an incredibly painful series of deaths (usually involving the god-awful Space Invaders ship) or an easy win (often involving the Defender ship).

The characters and enemies all behave exactly as they do in their originating games, making this a great bit of nostalgia for gaming vets. Yet, it's also a refreshingly new experience for everyone. All I have to ask is...

"Why can't the ROM check fail... again?"</body>

<body>the strict limitations of early consoles makes for a great comparative study of games. the palette, sprite size, and background limitations meant that there was a high level of consistency in assets and rules between games, and thus unique and well implemented mechanics obviously defined a game's quality.

rom check uses this observation to create a mashup of the classics, and perfectly executes what it attempts. you'll learn to play it quickly through trial and error. you'll sometimes be trapped in inescapable situations, and sometimes be lucky enough to have all the elements line up in your favor, but ultimately the randomness is balanced by the careful constraints of the system, and the generous number of lives provided.

the flexibility and variety of control invites comparisons to the original bubble bobble, while the constant shift in rules adds the reactionary element of warioware.

if two or more elements in the screenshots to the left bring you memories, you will probably love this game. it will make you want to buy this farbs fellow a drink, and have a chat with him about things. omg guys, more like rom check WIN, amirite?</body>

<body>ROM CHECK FAIL isn't a "proper game", as would many people say. Often these "pseudogames" show up in various competitions, showing sense of humor but lacking gameplay and also showing lack of skill of the creator.

This game is different though. Besides it does show sense of humor and brilliant idea for competition such as Video Game Name Generator, it also does have pretty solid gameplay!</body>
