Game Description

Subterranean Animism (Japanese: "Touhou Chireiden") is the eleventh game in the Touhou series of manic shoot 'em ups. Like the previous game, Mountain of Faith, collecting power-ups increases the number of "options" around your character (which can be sacrificed as bombs). However, the scoring is based around the concept of "grazing" bullets by flying close to them, which increases the amount of points you can receive.

This game is a lot like Mountain of Faith, with the addition of moving as close as you can to bullets without getting killed giving you extra points (much like Shoot the Bullet). It almost feels like a new level set of much harder levels for Mountain of Faith (which was pretty short at around six levels).

I really like the bullet patterns in this game — in most of the Touhou games, the bullets just move forward at a constant rate, whereas here, they’re far more likely to change shape, slow down, speed up, change direction, and so on, often quite suddenly. This makes the game much harder, but also much more challenging, or at least a different kind of challenge, because the challenge is no longer in finding safe spots and swerving among millions of bullets, but doing that while also anticipating their next change to their motion. It’s a welcome (although subtle) change in emphasis.
