    <review>
      <body>I play a lot of FPS games, mostly older classics like Doom and Quake, but i give a shot on newer games too (mostly to review them or because they attracted my attention). Most of them were and/or are hyped to death and those i still play, were rightly done so.

TECNO - the Base, isn't one of them, however. The reason is the game isn't hyped as those above is the developer is as indie as it gets. And yes, its made by a single person, not a multimillion company with staff big enough to fill a couple of Titanics (and sink due to big costs and zero income). However it lacks nothing you can find in those multi-A titles, except maybe the normal maps. But who needs normal maps? Doom had no normal maps, Quake had no normal maps, Half Life had no normal maps not even Super Mario had normal maps. Soldier of Fortune: Payback had normal maps and shiny enemies, but don't look at me if you play that game.

TECNO - the Base has 2001-era visuals, but those visuals are consistent. You won't see a 4096x4096 texture near a 256x256 texture, looking out of place (you won't see such a texture at all actually). This consistency helps the game to suck you into its atmospheric environment.

The sound of the game is good. Nothing special, it does the job, although i would like some mysterious background music. However its definitely much better than most freeware "look what i've done in FPS Creator in 10 seconds" FPS games (btw why FPS Creators sounds suck so much? One would think that the company would spend at least a couple of licenses to pay a sound guy make them some serious sounds).

Although being mostly an FPS, TECNO - the Base has its adventure elements too. These elements are mostly puzzles, like turning some lights in the correct order to activate a bridge. To solve those puzzles you have to find various elements around the base which will help you.

While on the "help" topic, i find it a nice addition that the game will help you proceed when you're stuck using the main character's thoughts. These thoughts are usually hints on what to do next, so you arent walking around totally aimlessly. However unlike some other FPS games, they're not given to you as "objectives" and you can ignore them while looking around to find other stuff.

But this doesn't make the game non-linear. I don't know about you, but i dont really like being totally free in a game :-). I'm getting lost :-P. I believe if linear progression is done right (see Half-Life), then its good if its not exposed very much (see Painkiller). Fortunately TECNO - the Base does it right and while you will notice it, it won't bother you because after every corner there is a new thing to see. So ok, its linear but this line contains a lot of nice stuff.

As a conclusion i would like to see more from Guruy Entertainment and when it comes to TECNO - the Base, i would like to see some community forums and some mod tools. That would increase the appeal of the game, since currently its the only FPS i know that combines hardcore FPS elements with hardcore Adventure puzzles.
