Marathon_logo 4 Now I never need to try drugs.
I love the fact that this game exists. The concept is simply inspired – Where else can you take control of a cutely shiny, disproportioned penguin named Pablo, armed to the gills with uzis, lasers, rocket launchers, et cetera? Not only that, but you get to blow the crap out of – wait for it – ZOMBIE penguins! But wait, there’s more – Pablo can also use, and even overdose on, mind-altering drugs! How cool is that?

Any game that dares to be that twisted, without being a media attention-grab, is a win in my book. But that’s not the only thing that’s good about this game. Also of note are the graphics – high-quality 2D with enough particle and lighting effects to make your head spin. Really. There is such a prodigious amount of eye-candy here, it almost feels like substance abuse. Combine that with in-game simulated substance abuse, and you get a dizzying, technicolor headtrip that is simultaneously sickening and made of awesome.

The only problems I have with this game lies in the gameplay. First off, there is the difficulty. After the first few levels, the endless onslaught of undead penguins will threaten to overwhelm even hardcore gamers. Some may enjoy this, but I personally find the level of difficulty to be excessive. (NOTE: I have not actually played the latest release, v1.7 which has an even easier setting.) This problem is compounded by very slow player movement, which makes evasion next to impossible. Finally, the gameplay itself can become a bit monotonous. You can only eviscerate so many identical zombie penguins before wanting to move on to something else.

My conclusion: Download this game now, and revel in the glory of its beauty and unbridled oddness. But don’t let it get to you – play until you’re sick of it, but no longer. If you feel like you can’t go on, don’t. If you do, you will probably end up hating the game. Which would be a shame, since it is a twisted masterpiece.
