So what is an RPG exactly? Is it a game where you level up stats? Collect items? Interact or follow a story of fantasy? I know forum boards have filled endlessly with this question, but lets set the question aside for now, so that I can simply assert that, if The Linear RPG is truly a role playing game (which is quite subjective i think) then this has to be the most linear RPG ever.
Here’s what you’ve got in The Linear RPG. 1. A story: it fills up the screen behind you as you progress down the zig zag path. 2. Leveling: as you gain experience from kills, you level up your health which you must do to make it through to the end (when you level up, a little star pops out, seen in the picture below). While the story is pure (often hilarious) fluff (a sort of funny commentary on fantasy or rpg storylines, which perhaps tries too hard to be funny and poignant) the combat is non existent. You don’t see any enemy you face, but realize you have faced them when your health drops.
At every corner of the path, a “town” (represented as a dot) will re-fill your health bar so that you can keep progressing and you’ll likely need to force your levels up to keep going since the difficulty does increase as you go. (this is mostly easily done by walking back and forth over a town dot a few steps in each direction to kill enemies, gain experience, but refresh health as you do it).
So how’s the game? Well, to be frank it kind of sucks. I wasn’t taken in my the funny rpg storyline as it seemed all too easy and trite, and since the fighting is all behind the scenes there’s not much to do other than read the rather crappy story. There’s not even a proper end to the game other than that the story finished and you just hang out where the zig zag ends. So add two and two together and you get a rather boring game, albeit fairly unique.
So if you’re bored or just want to experience something rather new, check out the Linear RPG. Otherwise, there’s much better experimental games to choose from.
