Game Description

Trilby's Notes is the third game released in the Chzo Mythos, but second in order of game chronology. It stands as a true sequel to the events of 5 Days a Stranger, and a prequel to the events of 7 Days a Skeptic.

The story follows the gentleman thief Trilby to an isolated Welsh hotel, seeking the idol which wreaked supernatural havoc in the first game. Believing that there is more to the story of Defoe Manor than he had previously thought, Trilby wishes to destroy the idol once and for all, but is suddenly caught up in a series of strange and gruesome events at the hotel that cause him to start shifting randomly between two parallel worlds.

Press_x_to_not_die 5 Chzo Mythos - always classic
Once again trying a new system, Yahtzee decided to use a text parser in this adventure. Set as third in the series, though second in the timeline, this story once again follows everyone’s favorite gentleman thief, Trilby, now working for the Special Talent Agency.

The horror present in this game is once again quite different from it’s predecessors, placing you as the only person truly savvy to the horrors around you.

The puzzling has taken a step back in refinement, mostly due to this being Yahtzee’s first attempt at a text parser, as well as a few puzzles not being explained properly (the bit with the wine bottle comes to mind; I never even realized it was there for about half an hour).

Despite the slight difficulty in puzzle-solving, the story, atmosphere, and overall intrigue of the game is still as fresh and amazing as we’ve come to expect from Ben “Yahtzee” Croshaw. A great game to play, especially for you lovers of a good story.

Regine9zl 2 Almost unplayable
I’m sorry, but this game cannot be rated that high. Of all four DeFoe games, Trilby’s Notes is definitely the weakest. Not because of the storyline, or the graphics, but because of the gameplay.

Seriously, this game is nearly unplayable. The controls are really awful, your character is slow as hell and just the idea of climbing these endless stairs scares the hell out of me.

The “writing” system may seem like an improvement, like you’re going to be free to do anything and type anything, but you’re definitely not. Most of the time, you’ll end up typing “open door” in front of doors – it would have been a good idea to assign this to a button… It’s as pointless as disabling the keypad and forcing the player to type “go left” or “go right” would have been.

In the end, i watched a “Let’s Play Trilby’s Notes” on Youtube instead of playing the whole game. It’s a shame because the series’ a great experience as a whole. Luckily the 4th episode is a classic, perfectly well-designed point’n’click. Thank God, or the Tall Man, i don’t know which one is stronger.
