I suppose, then, it’s no wonder why I like Tumiki Fighters so much. It’s a kick, and it hearkens back to my childhood. The aesthetic is brilliant, the core game mechanic is addictive, albeit frustrating at times… just try to catch one of those big bulky things in the first level so that it fires at a useful angle… and the controls are simple. This game is absolutely brilliant, and one of the only “art shmups” I’ve ever seen. A definite must-play – I’ve even been considering picking up the new Wii title “Blast Corps”, which from what I understand is a graphically-enhanced director’s cut of Tumiki Fighters with the original version also playable on the disc.

There is an excellent and very appealing idea behind this game – you enhance your ship by catching broken parts falling off from enemies. There is one major reason why this didn’t get rated by 5 stars for me – most of the times, the parts you catch are so big, that they collide with some enemy almost immediately, which is really very annoying, since you can pretty much use only the little parts. It may sound like a small problem, but it really destroys the gameplay alot, I was even deciding between three and four stars.
Another thing I don’t really like is the graphics, they have no style whatsoever. I am perfectly okay with 3d-cubes type of ships, but the color used make me sick.
But I shouldn’t end the review with negatives, because the game doesn’t deserve it. Tumiki Fighters is a game I’d always like to see redone in some other way, because it simply shown a great way shoot’ems could go.
