When I was a little kid, I would make space ships out of Lego bricks. No, I don’t mean the big space ships that could actually fit the little figures inside of them, that would actually have made sense. I mean tiny little flat things that looked vaguely like the heavily-pixellated starfighters in the games I played.

I suppose, then, it’s no wonder why I like Tumiki Fighters so much. It’s a kick, and it hearkens back to my childhood. The aesthetic is brilliant, the core game mechanic is addictive, albeit frustrating at times… just try to catch one of those big bulky things in the first level so that it fires at a useful angle… and the controls are simple. This game is absolutely brilliant, and one of the only “art shmups” I’ve ever seen. A definite must-play – I’ve even been considering picking up the new Wii title “Blast Corps”, which from what I understand is a graphically-enhanced director’s cut of Tumiki Fighters with the original version also playable on the disc.
