    <review>
      <body>Let me start this review by warning you that Uplink is not for everyone. Some people find it too simple, while others find it too complex. Uplink's interface consists of a futuristic, but minimalistic computer OS of the future. At a click, you have access to all your programs, memory banks, user information, and the game's faux e-mail system. What you see looking at your computer screen right now is much like what you'll see in the game.

As an Uplink agent, you are part of a mercenary hacker company and will be given the task of choosing and accepting missions from a faux message forum in the Uplink user database site (accessed from the game's version of the Internet, of course). These missions range from simple tasks such as copying or deleting a single file to altering user records to ruin lives or improve academic standings, or even copying entire databases -- or destroying them. These missions are accomplished using programs which can be purchased from the Uplink database, which are Hollywoodized hacking tools. Most operate with nothing more complex than point and click procedures, although some user skill is important for more complex tasks such as using the DOS-style consoles to clear a database.

This gameplay style is not for everybody and it has a learning curve. The game includes a tutorial (housed in a program which will offer to run itself the first time you "login" to your user file) which will walk you through the basics of the game. It is highly, highly recommended to download the demo before making a purchase. If you can get into the game, there's a wealth of rewarding experiences.

To begin with, the game is very open-ended. There are two sides to the storyline if you choose to participate in it, but you can also strike out on your own. You can accept any or every mission or just take a few and hope a loan from one of the banks will accomodate you -- or if you feel up to the challenge, hack into a bank account and transfer someone's balance into your own account. But better be quick if you intend to do this: Although the rewards are lucretive and your reputation will be highly enhanced by success, failure comes at a cost.

Game Over occurs if you're caught hacking something particularly sensitive (such as the Global Criminal Database, for example) and consists of your remotely accessed computer being seized and locked. Unfortunately, it isn't until you've played quite awhile and built up resources and upgraded your computer several times that you can afford the security measures needed to get a single "extra life," so a measure of perfection is required right off the bat. However, the early missions are all simple tasks and will help ease you into the game.

The music of Uplink is very enjoyable, ranging from soothing to upbeat techno, and will not detract from your experience. As an extra interactivity bonus, the game even has a built in IRC client you can purchase from the Uplink database which allows you to connect to an actual IRC server and chat with other Uplink players. As a bonus feature for people with actual programming (or hacking...) experience, Uplink features several behind the scenes items hidden in the program folder which require some work to open, one of which is said to require "half the data in the entire world"...

Again, if you can get into Uplink, you'll find it addictive and often thrilling. The lack of a true ending (unless you play on the "evil" side of the storyline, in which the goal is to destroy the Internet and computers as we know it -- think about it) may disappoint some, but you're free to set your own goals and play as much as you desire.</body>
