<body>This is possibly my overall favorite Cactus endeavor in terms of visual style and sound. It does take awhile to understand the non-standard shooter mechanic for the primary character, but once you do, this game is a blast.

There is just something incredibly satisfying about zipping through chunks of your enemies and using their own debris as weapons against them. If you've overlooked this game in the past, or if you've never played it... TRY IT. KILL SOME VECTOR BOSS GUYS.</body>

<body>Burn The Trash is one of my favorite Cactus titles. I love the mechanic of the overheating gun, and switching between enemy killing and enemy projectile killing. The loud, gritty electronic soundtrack suits it well.</body>

<body>This is an indie effort akin to Pulp Fiction or Velvet Underground in that it has inspired many ambitious developers to make their own games, often in its style.

And with reason. It&#8217;s good&#8212;with a sprawling amount of content, combining elements from platformers like Metroid and the Wonder Boy series, with some role playing elements and a cute story.

Very impressive considering the entire thing was done by one guy: engine, content, graphics, and music.

If you haven&#8217;t played it, consider it an essential.</body>

<body>I Was in the War presents simple, score-based arcade action in a stylish and fun little package.

Think Icy Tower, but with more chaos and a much more hip sensibility. And the line, character scaling, and flip mechanic reminded me of Vib Ribbon. This is a good thing.

The game is well balanced and excellently presented, belying its 3-hour construction time. Check it out if you haven't already.

<body>This is a really cute non-linear exploration platformer. It borrows the throwing mechanic from Super Mario Bros. 2, making throwing blocks your primary attack, as well as a novel means for maneuvering.

It's fun, the graphics and music are NES-styled and good. About the only complaint I have is the difficulty curve. The game pretty hard after an hour or so of progress.

But check this game out, it's a real gem. Especially if you like Metroid... or Cave Story.</body>

<body>Space Tripper and Mutant Storm ushered in the era of retro gameplay combined with abstract graphics -- and obscene amounts of additively blended particle effects.

I actually like Space Tripper and its Defender-inspired gameplay a little more than Mutant Storm. It's solid, fun, and interesting nice to look at.

Again, Pom Pom was ahead of their time with these games, now 7 years old. They were some of the first indies I can remember to really take advantage of the blending tricks available with OpenGL.</body>

<body>Excellent pacing and action, with a minimalist 3D flat shaded aesthetic. Black Shades manages to do a lot with very little.

Rosen's Lugaru is also highly recommended.</body>

<body>This is a cute little minimalist collection platformer. somewhere along the short time it takes to beat, you will find an item that gives you double jump and gradually figure out how to move about to grab all the items.

I wish there was a little more to the game, but again, it's still kind of cute in a totally stripped down way.</body>
